If you set up a network in Vista and want a workgroup other than "WORKGROUP", then you apparently can't have a home network. Go into the "Computer Name" area of system properties and change the network type to home, the workgroup name automatically changes to "WORKGROUP". If you change the workgroup name, then the network type changes to business.
I think this is the cause of my inability to log into a Buffalo Terastation. The login name is converted to "PCNAME\USER", and the Terastation rejects it.
If anyone finds a workaround, please post a reply. All my files are on the terastation and this makes the PC unusable.
Other network shares from XP computers work fine.

Network workgroup and type are linked in Vista
same problem here... requesting password when no password is needed...

me too. I am using terastation. Windows XP has no problem in connection but Vista could not mapped it. Network level speaking, there is no problem. Seems the the authentication method of Vista is different from Windows XP.
One thing want to share is I have another NAS running with the software call freenas 6.66 and it is attached to my domain controller which is Windows 2003. No problem in connection at all.
Anyone have idea on it. I think the authentication for the freenas is done through AD rather than the local windows vista logon. At least the user name I logon to freenas is different
